The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) revealed today, Sunday, its detailed mechanism for announcing the results of Kurdistan Regional Parliamentary elections and the expected timeline.
IHEC reported a strong voter turnout in the early morning hours, with over 2.6 million registered voters participating across four electoral districts. However, the exact location for the formal announcement of results has yet to be determined by the Board of Commissioners.

In an official statement to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), IHEC spokesperson Jumana Al-Ghalai stated, “The preliminary election results, covering both special and general voting, will be released within 24 hours. It is important to note that these are initial, partial results and cannot be contested.”

When addressing the location for announcing the results, Al-Ghalai explained, “The Board of Commissioners has not yet confirmed whether the official results will be disclosed from Baghdad or Kurdistan region.”

She added, “After the announcement of the preliminary results, the Board of Commissioners begins to decide on complaints, then it must count the votes and distribute the seats between parties, coalitions and candidates, which is a lengthy mathematical calculation process, then the final results are announced, then the appeals process is announced, whether in the judicial body or in the offices of the Commission, and after the appeals are decided, the Board of Commissioners certifies and the final results are announced.”

Al-Ghalai went on to elaborate on the process that follows the preliminary announcement, stating, “Once the initial results will announce, the Board of Commissioners will begin processing complaints. Afterward, a comprehensive vote count will take place, followed by the distribution of parliamentary seats among the competing parties, coalitions, and individual candidates. This is a mathematical calculation process. Upon completion, the final results will be announced, then the process for appeals will commence, either through the Judicial Authority or IHEC’s offices. After all appeals are addressed, the Board of Commissioners will formally ratify the final results.”

Additionally, Al-Ghalai highlighted that “the total number of eligible voters has exceeded two million and 600 thousand voters in 4 electoral districts,” explaining that “IHEC paid great attention to people with special needs and the elderly to cast their votes and enter the stations and there is a good turnout during the early morning hours.”
