The Ministry of Health revealed on Saturday, the number of psychiatric and addiction treatment hospitals across all provinces. It also announced that a joint ministerial committee had completed a national strategy specifically for autism patients, which has been submitted to the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers.
Adnan Yassin Adnan, the National Mental Health Advisor at the Ministry of Health, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that “Baghdad has four hospitals for treating mental health and addiction cases. Two of these are specialized in mental health—namely, Ibn Rushd Hospital and Al-Rashad Hospital—while the other two are specialized in addiction treatment, namely, Al-Ataa and Al-Qanah Social Rehabilitation Hospitals.”
He added that “there are specialized mental health hospitals in other provinces, including Al-Hayat Hospital in Diwaniyah, a hospital in Basra, and one in Nasiriyah. In the remaining provinces, mental health units are located within general hospitals.”
Regarding autism cases, Adnan confirmed that “a committee was formed based on a ministerial order, and the national strategy for autism was completed and submitted to the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers.”
He explained that “the strategy is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Health, non-governmental organizations, the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, and the Ministry of Higher Education.”
