To prevent the entry of narcotics... a proposal to establish detachments and sections at border crossings

    The General Directorate of Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Affairs, affiliated on Friday, with the Ministry of Interior, counted the number of people arrested and convicted over the course of two years, while revealing a proposal to establish squads to prevent the entry of narcotics into border crossings.
     
    The Director of Media of the General Directorate of Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Affairs of the Ministry of Interior, Hussein Al-Tamimi, said in a statement to the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "During the years 2023 and 2024, more than 25,000 people accused of drug crimes were arrested," indicating that "the competent courts in the Supreme Judicial Council issued judicial rulings against 143 criminals with the death penalty in accordance with the provisions of Article 27, and issued life imprisonment sentences against 565 in accordance with the provisions of Article 28 for local dealers."
     
     
    The statement pointed out that "judicial rulings against drug dealers are issued in accordance with Article 28, while international dealers are issued with death sentences in accordance with the provisions of Article 27 of the Drugs Law."
     
    It added that "in recent days, it was suggested that there be detachments at border crossings," noting that "the department is currently in the process of developing these detachments, which also included a proposal that there be sections at each border crossing with all powers so that they can take deterrent measures against anyone trying to bring in narcotics, especially after equipping the General Directorate for Combating Narcotics with specialized and accurate devices to detect narcotics."
     
    Al-Tamimi explained that "the proposals were submitted to the Committee for Combating Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances to include them in the law."
