The Federal Supreme Court confirmed on Tuesday the obligation of all authorities to preserve the unity of Iraq.

The court issued a decision that included the interpretation of the phrase (fully sovereign) contained in Article 1 of the Constitution of the Republic of Iraq for the year 2005, as it stated that "the Constitution of the Republic of Iraq guarantees the unity of Iraq, and since that unity requires that Iraq have full sovereignty over all its lands, airspace and territorial waters," according to a statement by the Federal Court - received by the Iraqi News Agency - INA.

"The decision also requires obligating all federal authorities, decentralized regional and governorate authorities, and local administrations to adhere to the provisions of the constitution to preserve the unity of Iraq and not to do anything that violates its sovereignty," included the statement.

The Court added, "Any authority that violates this has violated the constitution and endangered Iraq's sovereignty by Articles 1, 8, 50, 109 and 116 of the Constitution of the Republic of Iraq for the year 2005. The decision came by the decision issued by the Court No.89/Federal/2024."
