U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, as tensions between the two superpowers have eased somewhat despite a range of ongoing disputes.

While Blinken commended the diplomatic efforts that have facilitated progress, he cautioned that the United States would not waver in its concerns regarding China’s exports to Russia, indicating that Washington may impose additional sanctions.

Blinken stated that China is fueling President Vladimir Putin's "war machine." He remarked, "When Beijing asserts on one hand that it desires peace and wants to see an end to the conflict, yet on the other hand allows its companies to engage in actions that effectively assist Putin in continuing his aggression, it is illogical."

He emphasized that "as long as this relationship involves supplying Russia with what it needs to sustain this war, it presents a problem for us and for many other countries, particularly in Europe."

During the meeting, Wang conveyed to Blinken that China's position on the conflict in Ukraine is "transparent and clear, consistently advocating for peace and dialogue, and working toward a political resolution," according to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Saturday.

"The United States should stop smearing and planting evidence against China, imposing sanctions indiscriminately, and using this (conflict) ... to create and encourage confrontations between different camps," it cited Wang as saying.
