President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid affirmed on Sunday, Iraq's commitment to strengthening international cooperation to achieve environmental and health sustainability, noting that addressing climate change requires collective, cooperative, and international efforts.
During the inaugural session of the International Conference on Climate Change and Its Impact on Health Security in Iraq, as stated in a release from his office received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the President remarked, "Climate change poses not only an environmental challenge but also directly affects the health security of our peoples and the stability of nations and communities."
He highlighted that "environmental degradation, rising temperatures, and dwindling water resources contribute to the spread of diseases, increase pressure on healthcare systems, and threaten food and water security."
He added, "Iraq, at both the federal government and the Kurdistan Region level, is committed to collaborating with partners in the international community to seek sustainable and effective solutions to the challenges posed by climate change."
He emphasized that "success in addressing climate change requires collective, cooperative, and international efforts grounded in science and innovation, drawing on global expertise."
He noted that "the Paris Climate Conference plays a pivotal role in steering global efforts toward a low-carbon future, as this agreement provides a permanent framework that encourages countries to reduce their emissions and work together to adapt to the impacts of climate change."
The President reiterated "Iraq's commitment to enhancing international cooperation and activating the recommendations of the Paris Agreement to achieve environmental and health sustainability," affirming the full support of the presidency for this conference and all efforts aimed at realizing its noble objectives.
He concluded by saying, "I look forward to the outcomes and recommendations that will emerge from the sessions of this conference, which we hope will contribute to the development of integrated health and environmental policies that strengthen security and stability in Iraq and the region."
