The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) confirmed that it is following up on the case of the kidnapping of an Iraqi citizen in Homs, and while it indicated that the Syrian authorities have arrested a number of people involved in the kidnapping, it announced the continuation of efforts to reach the kidnapped citizen.
The ministry stated in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that it "is closely following the kidnapping of a citizen from Basra Governorate in the village of Al-Bayadiyah in the city of Homs on August 24, 2024 in this context, our embassy in Damascus, through the Chargé d'Affaires, is conducting intensive contacts with the highest security authorities in the Syrian Arab Republic to ensure his release as soon as possible."
It added, "The competent Syrian authorities have arrested a number of people for their involvement in the kidnapping incident, and the security authorities are continuing their efforts to reach the kidnapped Iraqi citizen and ensure his safety."
The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its "appreciation for the continued cooperation of the Syrian authorities, and affirms its commitment to follow up on this case until the Iraqi citizen is released and returned to his homeland safely," stressing "the importance of Iraqi residents and visitors communicating with the Iraqi embassy in Damascus, and not going to unsafe places in Syrian areas, to preserve their safety."
