The Ministry of Water Resources announced, today, Saturday, the inclusion of the Lower Kahriz Haji Bekhan on the World Heritage List of Irrigation Facilities.
The ministry stated in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that "during the 75th Executive Council meetings of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) held in the Australian city of Sydney for the period from (1-7-2024), it was announced that the Lower Kahriz Haji Bekhan in Kirkuk Governorate would be included in the World Heritage List of Irrigation Facilities, as an engineering achievement in building underground water channels, which required a deep understanding of various factors such as the slope of the terrain and the depth of the groundwater level one hundred and fifty years ago to provide irrigation water for agricultural and domestic purposes.".
The statement added that "this achievement came after the efforts of the Ministry of Water Resources, headed by the Minister and Technical Undersecretary, Chairman of the Iraqi National Committee for Irrigation and Drainage, to include our heritage irrigation facilities in such forums and introduce them internationally."
