The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Saturday that Iraq has been elected to chair the Group of 77 and China (G77) at the United Nations for the first time.
According to a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), "The Republic of Iraq has been chosen to lead the Group of 77 and China (G77) at the United Nations for the year 2025, following a meeting of the Asia-Pacific Group that discussed Iraq's candidacy for this position."
The statement further noted that "Abbas Kazem Ubaid, Acting Permanent Representative of Iraq to the United Nations in New York, delivered a speech highlighting Iraq's vision for its role during its chairmanship of the group and outlining key areas of focus."
Ubaid reaffirmed Iraq's commitment to the core principles of the group, particularly in supporting the goals and aspirations of developing countries in achieving economic, technological, and social development.
Ubaid expressed that "Iraq will work to ensure the success of this presidency, which marks the first time Iraq has held this position since the group's establishment 60 years ago."
He conveyed his gratitude for the support and endorsement from the Asia-Pacific Group and its confidence in assigning this responsibility to Iraq, affirming "his readiness to collaborate with member states to achieve common goals."
The Ministry also highlighted that "at the conclusion of the meeting, a unanimous decision was adopted to support Iraq in assuming the presidency of the Group of 77 and China (G77)."
The Member states extended their congratulations to Iraq and expressed their readiness to support its efforts during this significant leadership role. The Group of 77 and China is the largest coalition of countries at the United Nations, comprising 134 member states.
