Finance Minister Taif Sami, Deputy Chair of the Higher Council for Women’s Rights, said on Saturday that the government has implemented various measures to support Iraqi women. She emphasized that violence against women is a major issue that requires collective action to address.

Speaking at the Islamic Conference on Combating Violence Against Women, Sami stated, “Violence against women is a significant challenge that necessitates coordinated efforts from national and legislative institutions, civil society, and the international community to develop effective strategies to combat it in all its forms.”

She added, “It is crucial for government institutions, civil society organizations, and concerned individuals to work towards changing the culture of violence, enhancing environments that respect women’s rights, and promoting social justice to ensure a safe society for everyone.”

Sami noted that, in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, strategies and programs in Iraq must address needs and gaps to eradicate violence and discrimination against women. This includes efforts to raise awareness about women’s rights, enforce protective laws, and provide psychological and social support to victims.

She highlighted the importance of Islamic teachings in opposing violence against women, which are rooted in values of mercy and justice. Islam promotes gender equality and condemns any form of violence against women.

The Finance Minister also referenced the government program launched by the Prime Minister, which includes a focus on human rights and advocates for empowering, supporting, and protecting women through social protection programs. She mentioned that the government has formed the Higher Council for Women’s Affairs, led by the Prime Minister and including three female ministers.

Additionally, the government has launched the National Strategy for Iraqi Women, which outlines goals for protecting women’s rights and implementing the second national plan on women, peace, and security. This includes the Economic Empowerment Plan for Iraqi Women to create economic opportunities.

Sami noted that March 3 has been designated as a national day for Iraqi women, with the creation of a platform to support them and the launch of the National Women’s Initiative, which includes training programs and efforts to secure education and employment opportunities for women.
