Chinese state television reported today, Thursday, that the heavy rains that hit China on Monday as a result of Typhoon Gaemi left at least 30 dead and 35 missing in a village in central China.
The official Xinhua news agency said that the Ziqing area, about 1,500 kilometres southwest of Beijing, saw record rainfall over the weekend, with 645 mm of rainfall recorded locally in 24 hours.
It added that authorities had urgently dispatched more than 5,000 rescuers and 11,000 homes had been evacuated.
China is experiencing a summer of extreme weather, heavy rains and flooding, but also unusual temperatures locally, with much of the north suffering multiple heat waves, including the capital Beijing, where temperatures have topped 35 degrees Celsius on several days.
Last week, heavy rains from Typhoon Gaemi caused severe flooding in Manila, the capital of the Philippines, and parts of Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
