Nasser al-Asadi, the Prime Minister’s advisor for transportation affairs, announced on Saturday, that the Baghdad Metro project will cover 85% of the capital’s areas, with an investment exceeding $18 billion. He emphasized that this project will be the largest of its kind in the region.
“The consortium awarded the Baghdad Metro project consists of nine leading international companies,” al-Asadi told the Iraqi News Agency (INA). “This consortium includes some of the world’s foremost train manufacturers, experts in metro systems, and prominent international design firms.”
He further explained that “the Swiss-led consortium, which involves companies from Spain, France, Turkey, and a German bank, is set to begin work on the project in August.” The project is expected to be completed within four years, with a projected cost of $18 billion.
Al-Asadi noted that “the metro route has been meticulously planned, with over 20 site inspections conducted across Baghdad to ensure thorough assessment.” The metro will traverse 85% of Baghdad, connecting major religious sites, universities, seven ministries, football stadiums, public markets, including those in Sadr City and Shurja, and various tourist and recreational areas.
The project will feature seven intersecting lines, with three river crossings, and will include 64 stations and four parking facilities, each with a capacity for 10,000 vehicles, designed to alleviate traffic congestion.
