Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani, early Tuesday morning Baghdad time, received the U.S. Deputy Secretary of the Treasury, Mr. Wally Adeyemo, and his accompanying delegation at his residence in Washington, D.C. The meeting was attended by the Governor of the Central Bank of Iraq.

“During the meeting, discussions focused on cooperation between Iraq and the United States in the financial, banking, and economic sectors. They reviewed steps the Iraqi government has taken in reforming the financial and banking sector,” stated the media office in a statement, received by The Iraqi News Agency-INA.

“U.S. Deputy Secretary Adeyemo commended the government's measures to implement economic reforms and optimize energy investments, as well as the Central Bank of Iraq’s efforts to enhance the operations of Iraqi banks and the processing of financial transfers through correspondent banks, which now account for 80% of total financial transfers. The aim is to complete all transactions through the electronic platform and the Federal Reserve by the end of this year,” the statement added.

The meeting underscored the ongoing cooperation on the financial and banking reform agenda, the potential for cooperation on rehabilitating banks that have been subject to specific measures by the U.S. Treasury, and achieving compliance with international standards, coordinated with the Central Bank of Iraq.
