The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today, Friday, the recovery of 4 artifacts from Britain dating back to the Mesopotamian civilization.
Ministry spokesman Ahmed Al-Sahhaf said in a statement, received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that “as part of the tireless efforts of recovery diplomacy undertaken by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in London continues to follow up on antiquities outside Iraq and work to recover them, in cooperation with the British Museum.”.
Al-Sahhaf added, “Ambassador Muhammad Jaafar al-Sadr received artifacts consisting of three seals and an archaeological tablet, dating back to the Mesopotamian civilization around 2000 BC, to 600 AD,” noting that “a British woman handed over the seals that she inherited from her father.”.
The embassy also received another artifact from the museum, which is a piece of an archaeological wall.”
The statement added, "The ambassador appreciated the British lady's initiative, calling on everyone who has Iraqi antiquities to follow her example, as she volunteered to return them to her mother country, Iraq.".
He continued, "Ambassador Muhammad Jaafar Al-Sadr presented a message of thanks to the British lady, and the director of the Middle East Department at the British Museum, John Simpson, in appreciation of their work and cooperation with the ambassador."
