The President of the Republic, Abdulatif Jamal Rashid, extended congratulations on the 239th Anniversary of Sulaymaniyah's Founding .

The President said in a statement, received by The Iraqi News Agency-INA"On days like these, Sulaymaniyah celebrates its 239th anniversary since its founding by the Bapanis. As one of the major cities of Iraq and the region, Sulaymaniyah continues to lead the development process, as a result, it has become an example of beauty and brightness for the Kurdistan region and Iraq as a whole.

“Kurdish Prince Ibrahim Pasha Baban founded the modern city of Sulaymaniyah in 1784, naming it after his father Sulaiman Pasha and making it the capital of the Bapan Emirate. Thus, it has developed into a center for culture, science, and civilization,” he added.

“In addition to being Kurdistan's cultural hub, Sulaymaniyah is proud of its history as a symbol of national struggle and service,”

“The city has produced several politicians, activists, and cultural figures, including poets and writers who have been loyal to their homeland and served humanity,” he continued.

“Despite the oppression and injustice perpetrated by fascist regimes such as the Baath regime, Sulaymaniyah never gave up. It has always been devoted to defending its right to a free life and freedom from oppression and suppression. In those days, people were always striving to improve their lives and secure a decent standard of living for the future,” he noted. “Despite its commitment to the rights of the Kurdish people in Iraq, and its belief in the concept of a Federal Democratic Iraq, Sulaymaniyah has also supported Kurdish independence movements throughout Kurdistan.”

“Since the establishment of the Iraqi state, Kurdish leaders have emerged, demanding Kurdish rights and encouraging friendship and brotherhood with Iraqi people of all backgrounds. One such leader is Sheikh Mahmoud Al-Hafid”, he also said. Therefore, Sulaymaniyah's people often struggled and fought alongside their Arab brothers for a democratic Iraq and to protect Kurdish rights.

“During the construction of a free and democratic federal Iraq, this vibrant city played a crucial role. As a result, Kurdish and Arab intellectuals are tied together by a solid friendship and are striving to achieve common goals together, he confirmed. As well as the considerable sacrifices it made in this area, Sulaymaniyah's contribution to creating a new Iraq free of dictatorship calls for greater attention and effort to make it a more beautiful and splendid place. Particularly since Sulaymaniyah served as the headquarters and base of most political forces.

Our priority at the Presidency of the Republic is to serve every governorate and city in the country and to provide them with the best services as well as develop and advance them. Therefore, we are in constant contact with the competent authorities and work closely with the Kurdistan Region, the federal government, and local governments.
