Oil Minister confirms Iraq's commitment to climate protection and environmental preservation

    Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Minister of Oil, Hayyan Abdul-Ghani, confirmed on Monday, Iraq’s commitment to protecting the climate and preserving the environment, pointing to promising projects within the government’s approach to investing associated gas and converting it into clean energy.
     
    A statement from the Ministry of Oil, received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), stated that “Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Minister of Oil, Hayyan Abdul-Ghani, participated in the first dialogue session of the Climate Week in the Middle East and North Africa for the year 2023, along with the ministers of oil and energy in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.” Saudi Arabia, India, and the United Arab Emirates.
     
    The statement added, "The first session dealt with enhancing comprehensive participation and the circular economy to achieve fair and equitable energy transitions."
     
    Abdul-Ghani said, "Iraq's economy depends on revenues from oil, so Iraq has taken important steps in reducing emissions and preserving the climate and environment, as well as supporting projects to transition toward renewable energy, and adhering to the standards and specifications that have been approved in this framework."
     
    He pointed out that “the promising projects implemented by the government and the ministry are within the government’s approach to invest associated gas and convert it into clean energy, in addition to projects to invest in solar and renewable energy in generating electrical energy.”
     
    It is noteworthy that Climate Week in the Middle East and North Africa region is one of four regional climate weeks organized by the secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in cooperation with its global partners, the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Environment Programme, and the World Bank Group.
     
    It aims to discuss issues, challenges and opportunities related to climate change, and express opinions on them, collectively, so that they can be taken into account within the global assessment that will take place at the twenty-eighth Conference of States Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), which will be held at the end of November.
