Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani met with Mr. Maksat Babayev, the Minister of State for Turkmenistan Gas Affairs, along with his delegation.
“During the meeting, they discussed bilateral relations between the two countries, strategies for their development, and the enhancement of cooperation in the energy and gas sectors. This resulted in the signing of a joint memorandum of understanding to import gas from Turkmenistan to Iraq, addressing the gas needs of power stations,” stated the Media Office of the Prime Minister in a statement, received by The Iraqi News Agency-INA.
Prime Minister Al-Sudani expressed his congratulations on the signing of the memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Electricity and the Turkmen Ministry of Gas for gas supply. An Iraqi delegation is set to visit Turkmenistan on October 25 to finalize the contracts.
Al-Sudani emphasized the government's commitment to the energy sector in Iraq, highlighting its potential for diversifying and developing the economy. He acknowledged Iraq's abundant gas resources and the need for efficient investment, noting that there had been delays in this regard. The decision to import Turkmen gas is part of the government's strategy to diversify its sources of gas imports and ensure a stable supply for power plants. This approach aims to address longstanding challenges in the energy sector that have persisted for years.
For his part, Mr. Babayev conveyed the President of Turkmenistan's greetings to Prime Minister Al-Sudani and expressed Turkmenistan's willingness to enhance cooperation with Iraq across various sectors, fostering the mutual benefits of both nations.
