Japan and Taiwan have recently experienced powerful earthquakes, leading to the issuance of tsunami warnings in both countries. The seismic events, which struck off the coasts of the respective countries, have raised concerns and prompted authorities to urge residents to evacuate to safer areas.

    Japan’s Tsunami Advisory
In Japan, a tsunami advisory was issued after a strong earthquake struck near its outlying islands in the Pacific Ocean. The advisory, which represents the second-lowest of a four-stage warning system, asked people on islands in the Izu chain, extending south from the Tokyo region, to stay away from the coast and river mouths.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a series of offshore earthquakes hit the area on Thursday morning. The strongest earthquake measured magnitude 6.1 and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers. Despite the strength of the quake, it was not felt on the islands or in the Tokyo region. However, the Japan Meteorological Agency warned of the possibility of a tsunami as high as 1 meter hitting the coasts of the islands. A small tsunami measuring about 30 centimeters was observed at Yaene on Hachijo island. The agency lifted the tsunami advisory about two hours later, reporting no damage.

    Taiwan’s 6.9 Magnitude Earthquake
A powerful 6.9 magnitude earthquake shook Taiwan, leading to the derailment of carriages and the issuance of tsunami warnings in southern Japan. The U.S. Geological Survey initially measured the quake at 7.2-magnitude before downgrading it to 6.9 and stated that the tsunami threat had passed. Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau registered the quake at 6.8 magnitude and reported a relatively shallow depth of 4 miles.

After-shocks were felt across the island, including in Taipei, located more than 200 miles away. Near the epicenter, a low-rise building housing a convenience store collapsed, prompting rescue operations. In Hualien county, three carriages were derailed after a platform canopy collapsed, leading to the evacuation of 20 people onboard.

    Earthquake Prone Regions
Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone places on Earth. In 2011, a massive magnitude 9.0 quake triggered a tsunami that caused significant destruction in northern Japan and led to the meltdown of three reactors at the Fukushima nuclear plant. Similarly, Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates, making it susceptible to earthquakes. In 1999, a 7.3 magnitude quake in Taiwan resulted in the deaths of more than 2,000 people.

    No Major Disasters Expected
While the recent earthquakes have caused considerable concern, authorities have assured the public that there is no risk of a disaster similar to the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Despite the powerful tremors, no immediate damage or casualties have been reported in either country. However, the events serve as a sobering reminder of the seismic activity in these regions and the importance of robust early warning systems and disaster preparedness measures.
