Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani participated on Saturday in the 15th session of the Islamic Day for Elimination of Violence against Women, hosted by the National Wisdom Movement in Baghdad.

“In his speech, Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani reflected on the Tragedy of Karbala and its profound significance. He highlighted the remarkable courage of Sayyida Zaynab bint Ali (peace be upon them both) during the families' journey to the Levant,” stated the Media Office of the Prime Minister in a statement, received by The Iraqi News Agency-INA.

“Sayyida Zaynab played a pivotal role in upholding the message of Imam Hussein and his companions, ensuring its continuity. Following his passing, she took on the responsibility of safeguarding women and children during their journey into captivity. Her journey symbolized the fight against violence towards women, serving as a tribute and affirmation of their status,” PM said.

Prime Minister Al-Sudani emphasized the government's commitment to prioritizing the women's agenda. He highlighted the National Strategy for Iraqi Women (2023-2030), launched in March, which encompasses multiple initiatives aimed at empowering women across various sectors.

The following are the highlights of the Prime Minister's speech delivered during the ceremony:

The commemoration, initiated years ago by Sayyid Abdul Aziz al-Hakim (may he rest in peace), holds significant importance as it addresses the protection of women and their concerns.

Upholding women's rights is reinforced by legal frameworks and honorable objectives.

Reflecting on Sayyida Zeinab's (peace be upon her) journey with the families to the Levant against violence towards women doesn't diminish her courage; rather, it honors and uplifts the status of women.

We've initiated a (16)-day campaign against women's violence, targeting various forms such as physical, psychological, and spiritual abuse. This includes coercion, obstructing education, impeding leadership roles, and exposing them to poverty.

One aspect of this violence is hindering women from fulfilling their life tasks in alignment with their emotional state and innate qualities, respecting their inherent wisdom.

Today, there are voices attempting to intrude upon our society, aiming to disrupt cultural values by promoting concepts incongruent with our society's norms.

Our stance isn't against all laws or agreements that empower women; we're noting concerns about some elements that are conflicting with our values and norms.

Backing women and eradicating injustice ranked high in our government agenda, leading to several decisions and directives related to women's issues.

The Council of Ministers endorsed the Iraqi Women's National Strategy (2023-2030), and active implementation is underway, encompassing participation, protection, economic empowerment, and social dimensions.

The Yazidi Survivors Law has been enacted, now encompassing Turkmen women and all segments, acknowledging the sacrifices of mothers and wives of martyrs nationwide.

Our government takes pride in women's presence in top executive roles, with three ministries and key positions being held by women.

Today, women's representation in Parliament has exceeded the quota, nearing a third of total members, up from a quarter.

Our commitment remains unwavering in ensuring a dignified life for women, protecting them from injustice, and enabling them to reach the rightful positions they deserve.

There is no prejudice against women, and there is no discrimination, bias or stereotyping that puts them in a lower rank, but rather they are men's partners in building Iraq.

Safeguarding women's rights is a moral obligation that precedes legal or administrative considerations.

Our best regards to all women on this occasion, and we commend all endeavors striving for equity, protection, nurturing, and support for women.
