The United Nations announced today, Friday, the death of 62 humanitarian relief workers around the world since the beginning of 2023.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in a statement that "62 aid workers have been killed in crises all over the world this year," noting that "84 others were injured, and 34 workers were kidnapped.".
He added, "The Republic of South Sudan is the highest in terms of insecurity for several consecutive years, and this year the country recorded 40 attacks on aid workers and 22 deaths as of August 10.".
According to the statement, "Sudan ranks second with 17 attacks on humanitarian workers, resulting in 19 deaths as of August 18," noting, "The number of deaths among aid workers during the year 2022 reached 116 people," warning of "the fall of Casualties and injuries among aid workers in the Central African Republic, Mali, Somalia and Ukraine, where 444 workers were attacked last year.
The statement pointed out, "In 2021, 460 humanitarian workers were attacked, resulting in the death of 141 of them."
