UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed solidarity with the global Muslim community after another Quran desecration in Sweden amid the United Nation's and the international community's failure to stop such provocations.
He made the remarks on Thursday in his meeting with the Ambassadorial Group of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
The meeting came after an Iraqi refugee in Sweden desecrated a copy of the Muslim holy book with police protection.
Guterres denounced acts of intolerance, violence, and Islamophobia, which he said fuel tensions and lead to discrimination and radicalization, his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.
He also claimed the UN was committed to fully implementing the Human Rights Council Resolution on “countering religious hatred constituting incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence.”
The Geneva-based UN Human Rights Council on July 12 passed a resolution condemning recent attacks on the Quran despite Western countries’ opposition.
The resolution, which urges condemnation of attacks targeting the Quran and labels them as “acts of religious hatred,” was voted by the 47-member council.
However, the UN has failed to adopt any practical measures to stop the desecration of Islamic sanctities and hold the perpetrators accountable. Observers believe the UN's inaction has emboldened extremists to continue their hateful acts with impunity.
