Iraq seeks a fair share of water, says President Rashid

    President of the Republic Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid affirmed today, Friday, that Iraq seeks to obtain a fair share of water.
     
    The media office of the Presidency of the Republic stated, in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "the President of the Republic, Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, met at his residence in New York, Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), Rola Dashti, in the presence of Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein, and the governor of Basra, Asaad Al-Eidani”.
     
    The statement added, "During the meeting, they discussed joint cooperation between Iraq and ESCWA in the field of economic and social development and the importance of developing it in order to achieve the set goals."
     
    President Rashid affirmed, "Iraq suffers from a lack of transboundary water flow, which has increased the rate of drought and desertification in the country, and that it seeks to obtain a sufficient and fair share of water, stressing the need to issue legislation and laws that regulate this process in the riparian countries."
     
    He pointed to "The importance of coordination and joint work with international community organizations to overcome the effects of the water crisis and climate change, and also touched on the issue of the IDPs and the need to resolve their file by repatriating them to their areas of residence," pointing to " The need to exert more work and joint efforts to improve their conditions and provide them with the appropriate atmosphere in terms of services and rehabilitation of infrastructure.
     
    For her part, Rola Dashti affirmed "ESCWA's support for promoting economic and social development in Iraq," noting that " ESCWA works in Iraq in areas affected by terrorist groups and focuses its activities on institution-building, training and capacity development in managing natural resources." ".
