Foreign Minister stresses the importance of NATO continuing to provide advice and training to the Iraqi forces

    Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein stressed today, Tuesday, the importance of NATO continuing to provide advisory and training programs to the Iraqi security forces.
     
     
    A statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), stated that "Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein met NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the NATO headquarters in the Belgian capital, Brussels."
    According to the statement added, "The two sides discussed cooperation relations between Iraq and NATO, files of common interest, training programs and ability building that are provided in cooperation with the NATO training mission in Iraq, and they touched on the security situation in the region."
    Hussein praised "NATO's efforts to support the Iraqi forces and the capacity-building programs that are provided through the NATO Training Mission in Iraq (NMI) to support Iraqi security institutions, especially during its war against ISIS," stressing "the importance of continuing to provide advisory and training programs to the Iraqi security forces and its various institutions, and the necessity of continuing consultations with the concerned Iraqi authorities to develop common visions to set priorities and within full respect for Iraq's sovereignty.
    For his part, Stoltenberg expressed the NATO’s keenness to provide training programs in order to build the capabilities of the Iraqi security and military forces, in full consultation with the Iraqi government, which contributes to strengthening Iraq's efforts to achieve stability and prevent the return of ISIS and other terrorist gangs, appreciating the role and professionalism of the Iraqi security forces, and he stressed "the readiness of the alliance to continue cooperation with the Iraqi government."
