PM’s advisor: The government will implement 30 projects to combat the effects of climate change

    The Prime Minister's Adviser for Environment and Climate Affairs, Ali Al-Lami, announced today, Tuesday, on the projects to be implemented to reduce the effects of climate change, while setting the date for the regional conference called for by Prime Minister Muhammad Shia'a Al-Sudani.
     
    Al-Lami said, to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "Prime Minister Muhammad Shia' al-Sudani stated, in his speech during the Iraq Climate Conference held in Basra, his commitment to the government's program regarding climate changes and transferring it from the theoretical side to an operational reality," indicating that "This trend is unprecedented for an Iraqi government at the beginning of its era."
     
    He added, "The conference came to discuss with international bodies, organizations and donor countries to support Iraq implement its priorities in the climate action agenda," noting that "this will be followed by financing for projects during the current government."
     
    Al-Lami continued, "Al-Sudani made it clear in his speech that there will be a follow-up by the Council of Ministers to implement these projects, and he instructed the Economic Ministerial Council to set a time frame for the implementation of programs and projects," pointing out that "the projects are a package included in the 2023 budget, foremost of which comes not to burn gas and invest it, contracts for renewable energies and many heavy water treatment projects in the governorates, which protect the water environment and human health from pollutants and benefit from it, in addition to projects to combat desertification and the application of modern irrigation systems, which are about 30 projects that will be referred to Parliament for approval.
     
      "There is a fund called the Green Climate Fund, which is related to climate change programs and projects for countries affected by climate change, as the budget of this fund is 100 billion dollars," explaining that "Iraq can benefit from the funds of this fund to confront climate changes." Al-Lami said.
     
    Regarding the regional conference called for by Prime Minister Mohamed Shia’ Al-Sudani, in his speech during the climate conference, Al-Lami stressed that “this conference will be held during the current year,” pointing out that “the conference aims to develop joint programs and cooperation to combat the effects of climate change, as it affects the rest of the world.” regional countries".
