Foreign Minister calls on Norway to reopen its embassy in Baghdad

    Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein called on Sunday, on the Norway to reopen its embassy in Baghdad, due to its positive impact on strengthening and developing bilateral relations between the two countries.


    Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "This came during the reception of Hussein, the non-resident ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway to Iraq, Espen Lindbeck, in his office in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building, today, and the meeting discussed the bilateral relations between the two countries, and ways Strengthening them, and the importance of bridging cooperation by creating opportunities that would achieve the aspirations of the two friendly peoples."


    Hussein stressed, according to the statement, "the necessity of reactivating the Iraqi-Norwegian joint committee between the two countries that was signed in 1979, activating memorandums of understanding and bilateral cooperation files, and exchanging official visits between officials of the two countries."


    The statement added that "the two sides discussed the regional situation and Iraq's role in easing regional tension in the region, and they touched on the convening of the Baghdad Conference for Cooperation and Partnership in its second edition, to be held in Amman in February 2023, and the invitations extended to states and heads of international and regional organizations, particularly the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States."

    For his part, the Norwegian ambassador congratulated the minister on the occasion of the formation of the new government, and the renewal of confidence in him as Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Iraq, stressing his country's desire to develop bilateral relations and consolidate joint cooperation in a way that achieves prosperity for both friendly countries."

    He extended an official invitation to the minister to visit Oslo and to participate in the Oslo Forum to be held next June.
     The ambassador praised Iraq's role in bringing together views in the region, and described it as the "peacemaker" in the region, praising the Iraqi government's efforts in combating corruption and providing serious services to the Iraqi people.
