The Ministry of Water Resources (MOWR) announced on Wednesday that Iraq got the membership of the standing committee of Ramsar Convention for wetlands.
A statement by (MOWR), received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) said that “Iraq got the membership of the standing committee of Ramsar Convention on wetlands after obtaining the votes of all the countries of west and middle of Asia; this came as a result of the efforts exerted by the ministry’s delegation participating in the 14th conference of Ramsar Convention on wetlands.”
"After this important achievement, Iraq has the right to vote on all decisions and initiatives issued by the Supreme Secretariat of the Convention," the statement added, pointing out that "the ministry will be able to reduce the risks that the country is currently going through under the conditions of drought and water scarcity and in coordination and cooperation with the rest of the relevant countries and the signatories to the agreement."
