President Charles Michel sent out a new issue of his newsletter in which he informs citizens about the activities of the European Council.
This time, the President stressed that Russia's war against Ukraine is having a dramatic impact on the energy situation in Europe, which requires a new energy strategy to tackle the crisis and lay the ground for a robust and resilient economy.
Against this background, President Michel called for the establishment of a genuine energy union as an essential pillar of the EU sovereignty that would allow Europeans to act collectively.
He emphasised that to reach a compromise and take action, the energy union should be underpinned by common values and principles such as solidarity, fairness and transparency, in order to strengthen security of supply, create a level playing field and ensure affordable prices.
"It is urgent to establish a genuine Energy Union. It will be an essential pillar of the EU sovereignty. Energy is like the blood running through the veins of our economies," he highlighted.
