Iraqi National Security Service (INSS) announced that it had thwarted on Saturday, attempts to smuggle about (2,000 tons) of wheat in separate security operations in four governorates.
"Through the search operations carried out throughout Iraq, and after obtaining judicial approvals INSS detachments in Najaf Governorate were able to seize (1,500 tons) of wheat improperly stored”, INSS said in a statement , received by The Iraqi News Agency(INA).
"Our detachments in Al-Diwaniyah province were able to thwart a smuggling operation of the wheat crop with an amount of up to 190 tons, which was distributed among five wheels and arresting the owners, in addition to seizing an attempt to smuggle the rice crop in the same province with a quantity of up to (15 tons) allocated for the purposes of the food basket (it is forbidden to sell and trade), as the person responsible for them was arrested,” the statement added.
The statement pointed out that "INSS detachments in Nineveh Governorate seized six wheels loaded with (140 tons) of wheat prepared for sale on the black market, and arrested their owners, adding, “as for Wasit Governorate, our detachments were able to seize a load wheel intended for smuggling the wheat crop with an amount of up to (28 tons) that was on its way to Babil Governorate, where it was intercepted and its owner was arrested."
The statement also stressed that "The items seized above were confiscated and handed over to the relevant authorities, and all the accused were referred to the legal authorities to receive their punishment in accordance with the law."
