The Directorate of Sports and Youth in Maysan governorate formed the first women’s football team in the governorate in a move to encourage young women to practice and spread this game among women’s community.
The Iraqi News Agency (INA) met the head of the Women's Sports Division in Maysan Youth and Sports Directorate and the head of the women's football team, Suhad Mohsen, who spoke about the beginnings of this project and said: "We started forming the first women's team in the governorate in the middle of last November through a women's sports festival, which aimed to introduce women to the activities of women’s sports and its importance in our daily lives and the importance of the governorate’s participation in the sports events,” indicating that “the idea gained great popularity among women and I received encouragement to form women’s teams for all sports, and the first team of 10 players was formed.”
Suhad added, "The Directorate of Youth and Sports of Maysan provided all the requirements, equipment and means of transportation for the girls, and overcame all obstacles to the success of this important project."
She also confirmed, "Our ambition is to develop the team and get the name of the Maysan Governorate to all sports forums and get the first positions through the participation of the football team in the Iraqi Women's League and the tournaments in the rest of the provinces."
