The next German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, stressed that Germany must set an example in the fight against climate change, and that it, as a major industrial country, must “take the lead”.
“We in Germany bear a great responsibility to make this work,” said the leader of the Social Democratic Party, who will take office next week, referring to the fight against climate change.
He added, “We will do it for ourselves and at the same time for others, because we are the ones taking the lead, as one of the most prosperous industrialized countries in the world, with the most modern technologies and the most efficient scientists.”
The new government is scheduled to take office on Wednesday after members of parliament (Bundestag) elect Schulz as a chancellor, but before that, members of the Green Party and the Free Democratic Party must ratify the coalition document.
Green party co-leader Robert Habeck will take over the new government’s climate and economy ministry, and will also be deputy chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Schulz’s statement came during an extraordinary conference in Berlin that gathered his party delegates to approve the coalition document signed with the Greens and the Liberals to succeed Angela Merkel’s government.
About 600 delegates voted in favor of the agreement, and the opposition was limited to seven delegates, while three others abstained from voting.
