Baghdad-INA
The Ministry of Water Resources (MOWR) clarified on Friday, the reasons for its request from the Arab League to give the issue of water in Iraq special attention, noting that the challenges facing Iraq are considerable.
MOWR spokesman Awni Diab told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "The Minister of Water Resources asked the Arab League to pay special attention to the issue of water in Iraq, while attending the ministerial council meeting of Arab Water Ministers, since Iraq is facing great challenges, with the upstream countries."
Diab affirmed that "Due to the Iraqi request, the Arab League took a decision to support Iraq in this file and to address the countries from which the rivers flow, to provide Iraq with its fair share of the two rivers' water, because it is the only country who is affected, and it has no sources of water other than what comes from the Tigris and Euphrates."
Last November, the Ministry of Water Resources obtained a decision from the Arab Ministerial Council for Water, according to which the Arab League should approach all neighboring countries to guarantee Iraq's water quotas.
