Ministry of Environment announced on Wednesday, the formation of a higher committee headed by Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi to establish a remote air, water and soil test center, while indicating the development of a strategy to reduce environmental pollution.

“International reports indicate a high rate of pollution in the country. Infrastructure disregard, wars and terrorist challenges, are all reasons that significantly affected the increase in pollution rates," said the Minister of Environment, Jassim Al-Falahi, in a statement to the Iraqi News Agency (INA).

He added, "The lack of rehabilitation of facilities, factories, and municipal departments, in addition to sewage plants, led to the survival of large quantities of pollutants in water sources and an increase in air pollution rates, especially since the technologies used in the industrial sector, whether oil or other industries, are old technique and carbon-intensive, meaning high rates of air, water and soil pollution,”

"The Ministry of Environment, under the guidance of Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, began developing national strategies to reduce environmental pollution, as well as a strategy for environmental security, protection and improvement of the environment," he added, noting that "work is underway with the rest of the sectors in order to complete the strategy,”

Al-Falahi included, "A higher committee headed by Al-Kadhimi is working to establish a remote sensing center, that is, to examine air, water and soil remotely, as well as to form a national center for early warning and monitoring, which aims to collect a database on pollution in preparation for developing plans in this regard,"
