Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer confirmed today, Thursday, that he strongly opposes the idea of holding the World Cup every two years under a proposal submitted by the International Football Association (FIFA).
The head of the Bavarian giant came to the German “Kicker” magazine, saying: “The players, coaches and all club officials complain about the crowded matches and now they want to increase the momentum of these matches. I think that this makes no sense at all,” adding: “We have to look at the health of players".
He added, "The current calendar has proven its usefulness for several decades. It is true that this idea brings additional income and money plays an important role in professional sports, but football should never be sacrificed at the expense of material interests."
FIFA President Gianni Infantino had called for a consensus to hold the World Cup every two years and for a summit to be held in December to study this issue.
A report from FIFA on the idea of holding the finals every two years in November is due to be published before the World Summit by the end of the year.
The idea of organizing the World Cup once every two years was floated in early March by former French coach Arsene Wenger, director of global football development at FIFA, but it faced great opposition.
FIFA launched a "feasibility study" proposed by the Saudi Federation for the Game, which is close to Infantino, during the 71st General Assembly meeting in FIFA, which was held on May 21, 2021.
However, FIFA's proposals met with objections, especially from the Slovenian President of the European Union (UEFA) Aleksandar Ceferin, considering that this plan would "weak" the World Cup, while CONMEBOL considered that shortening the interval "is not justified from a sporting point of view".
