The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), confirmed today, Friday that 1.6 billion students were affected by the closure of schools due to Corona.
UNICEF said that "There is no alternative to in-person learning, and schools must be reopened as soon as possible, but the crisis of school closure crisis has highlighted the need for flexible educational systems, with distance learning options that should be accessible to all."
UNICEF also indicated that "Even before Corona pandemic, the world was going through a learning crisis where 53% of children in low- and middle-income countries were unable to read a simple text by the age of ten, announcing that this rate is expected to rise to 63% due to school closures."
"The effects of this on children in low- and middle-income countries will be even more severe, given their lower levels of learning even before the pandemic, lack of access to technology for distance learning, and the long period of school closures," UNICEF stressed.
