Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi said on Wednesday, that the anti-corruption commission had disclosed files that had not been revealed in 17 years.

"Corruption and money smuggling are a serious disease that affects any society and any country, if the risks of this disease are not taken seriously and responsibly by taking measures to combat corruption, smuggling and underestimating the capabilities of peoples," al-Kadhimi said in his speech at a conference to recover corruption-looted funds attended by the Iraqi News Agency (INA).

He pointed out that "Holding the conference on the recovery of looted funds is to confirm that corruption and the recovery of the Iraqi people's money smuggled out of Iraq are a priority for the Iraqi government, a priority for our people, which many of their capabilities and funds were squandered in senseless wars and internal and external conflicts, while the corrupt have invested Iraq's special circumstances in smuggling the country's funds.”

"Corruption was present in weakening the institutions of the Iraqi state, as well as choosing the wrong person in the right place in all institutions, just as corruption was the twin of ISIS and its back in wreaking havoc Iraqis," he said.

"The road to a good state begins with being open to the people about the diseases that have led to the decline of a great, historical and fundamental country in the region and the world like Iraq," he said, assuring that  “the government has set its priority in the fight against corruption, that a special committee has been set up to combat it, which has done its duty with the Integrity Commission, the judiciary and the Ministry of Justice and within one year uncovered corruption files that have not been revealed for 17 years, and recovered funds looted from abroad.

Prime minister called the “Friendly countries to help Iraq recover its funds," adding that "maximum cooperation with all countries in this regard will be provided."

He concluded his speech saying that "By insisting on the return of smuggled funds, with your efforts, ideas and fraternal responsibility that unites us, we will fight the scourge of corruption and money smuggling, and we will create a safe and fair environment for our peoples, and the time has come to say enough for corruption, destruction and destruction in Iraq and in every country, enough disregard for the capabilities and rights of peoples, enough torturing our peoples, stealing of their money, destruction of their economies.”
