The Director of the European branch of the World Health Organization, Hans Kluge, seemed more pessimistic, today, Friday, about the ability of the high percentage of vaccination alone to stop the outbreak of the “Covid-19” epidemic, due to the emergence of mutantes that reduced the possibility of the formation of collective immunity, according to the French Press Agency.

With the increasing possibility that the disease will remain rampant in the long term without being able to eradicate it, Kluge called, during a press conference, to "proactively adapt our strategies on vaccination", especially on the issue of booster doses.

In May, the UN health official emphasized that "the epidemic will end when we will vaccinate at minimum 70% " of the world's population.

When asked whether this goal is still valid or should it be raised, Kluge indicated that the new mutant is highly contagious, especially the 'Delta' mutant, and thus the data changed. He explained that when he made the statement months ago, "no more transmissible mutants had appeared," although the "Delta", which was first detected in India.

"So I think that brings us to the point that the primary goal of vaccination is above all to prevent severe forms of disease and death," Kluge said.

He also added: "When we consider that Covid will continue to mutate and will remain with us, like a cold, we must be proactive in how we adapt our vaccination strategy to chronic transmission of infection and come to very accurate knowledge of the impact of additional doses."
