The Parliamentary Legal Committee confirmed on Thursday, deferring the penal code and Recover Stolen Funds law to the next parliament.

Deputy Chairman of the Committee, Mohammad Al-Ghazi, said in a statement to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "sending the draft laws at the end of the parliament's work is incorrect, especially since the parliament sessions were not held during the last period," pointing out that "the Penal Code will be deferred to the next parliament as it is one of the most important laws that needs extensive discussions.

Al-Ghazi added, "The Penal Code needs to hold many workshops to listen to the opinions of university professors specialized in criminal law as well as the social and psychological aspect, since it has punitive and reforming aspects," stressing "the need to take the opinion of the Supreme Judicial Council as the executing authority of the law".

He explained, "A lot of changes will take place in the articles of the Penal Code, because there have been a lot of crimes related to the development in the information and technological fields and there was no legal cover to criminalize them.

Regarding Recover Stolen Funds law, Al-Ghazi confirmed, "The law includes subsequent steps to recover corruption funds, support financial and regulatory institutions and activate their tools."
