US President Joe Biden declared a state of emergency in New York and New Jersey and ordered federal aid to be provided to those affected and to address the devastation caused by Hurricane Ida.
"President Joe Biden declared states of emergency in the state of New York and New Jersey and directed federal assistance to the state for damage caused by the hurricane," the White House said in a statement.
"The President's action authorizes the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Emergency Management Agency ( FEMA ), to coordinate all disaster relief efforts, " the White House said in its statement late Thursday .
Flash floods have killed at least 44 people in four northeastern states, including New Jersey, where Hurricane Ida dumped torrential rains.
