The death toll from flooding caused by Hurricane Ida has risen to at least 13, officials said Thursday.
"Nine people died in New York City, and four were killed in Elizabeth, New Jersey," a mayoral spokesman told AFP, police said.
Local media reported that at least 22 people were killed in the New York area.
Earlier in the day, New York Governor Kathy Hochhol declared a state of emergency in the state as the remnants of Storm Ida caused massive flooding in New York City and across the northeastern United States.
