Ministry of Health and Environment revealed the results of the committee formed under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi to follow up on the sources of pollution.
Undersecretary of the ministry of environment Jassim Al-Falahi said the pollution of water sources is one of the most important problems and challenges facing the environment of Iraq, especially that the effect of climatic changes, which is accompanied by a decrease and dwindling in the water quotas from the upstream countries, especially Turkey and Iran, and their construction of dams, affected the water revenues.
He added that "the negative strategic effects on the lives and health of citizens and on the quality of water, and to prevent the recurrence of problems, a committee was formed, headed by Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, to follow up the sources of pollution," noting that "the task of the committee is to follow up the sources of water pollution and oblige the polluters to establish treatment units, whether they are Municipal departments within the Municipality of Baghdad or the municipal departments in the Ministry of Housing and Construction or the governorates, in addition to factories in the Ministry of Electricity, Oil and Agriculture,” stressing that “this committee has achieved important goals within effective plans.
He continued, "Within the Municipality of Baghdad, sewage treatment has improved from 38% to 68% in the Rustumiya and Al Buaitha areas. Al-Falahi called for "establishing treatment units for sewage and pollutants and to avoid throwing them into rivers, in order to preserve water quality in light of the escalating effects of climate change on Iraq.
