The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, failed again in his effort to appoint an envoy to Western Sahara, a position that had been vacant for nearly two years, after the Polisario Front rejected a Portuguese candidate.
"This is not the first candidate to be rejected," said a diplomat, who asked not to be named.
He explained that several personalities who were contacted within two years apologized after asking for time to think about managing the seemingly endless complex conflict.
The last candidate proposed was the former Portuguese Foreign Minister, Luis Amado, the citizen of Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, according to diplomats who asked not to be named, but the "Polisario" Front rejected the proposal after studying his statements when he was a minister, and confirmed that it noticed his inclination towards Morocco, according to the same sources. The new US president's policy regarding this file, nor his position on the announcement of his predecessor Trump, has not yet been fully clear.
The next meeting of the Security Council on the Western Sahara issue is scheduled for April 21 and will be closed.
