Officials from Nineveh province, including Governor Abdul Qader Al-Dakhil and the President of the Nineveh Court of Appeal, Raed Hamid, visited Al-Khasfa on Sunday, a site infamously used by the terrorist group ISIS for executing innocent civilians.

In a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the Supreme Judicial Council stated: “The President of the Nineveh Court of Appeal, Raed Hamid, accompanied by the Governor of Nineveh and security leaders, visited Al-Khasfa, a site used by ISIS to forcibly disappear its victims during its control of Mosul in 2014.”

The statement further explained that “this visit is part of ongoing efforts to document the crimes committed by the terrorist group, shed light on the suffering of victims and their families, and acknowledge the mass executions that saw thousands of innocent people thrown into what became known as the ‘Pit of Hell.’”

During the visit, officials initiated the process of securing necessary approvals to support the Martyrs Foundation and the Mass Graves Directorate with an estimated budget of 40 billion Iraqi dinars to facilitate the excavation of the site—a process expected to take up to five years.

The officials emphasized “the importance of documenting these crimes to ensure justice is served and hold those responsible accountable.”

They also highlighted the need to transform the site into a memorial that honors the victims and raises awareness about the ongoing fight against terrorism.
