Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani Emphasized the Importance of the Samawah Gas-Fired Power Plant in Strengthening the National Grid and Increasing Production Capacity.
Media Office of the Prime Minister said in a statement obtained by the Iraqi News Agency INA that Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani launched the construction of the Samawah Gas-Fired Power Plant Investment Project today, Thursday, with an initial production capacity of 250 megawatts.
The statement read "The Prime Minister underscored that this project represents a major milestone for the province, which holds strong industrial and investment potential, playing a vital role in revitalizing the national economy and boosting local production."
The statement also said "He emphasized that developing essential infrastructure, including electricity networks, roads, and public services, will create new opportunities for private sector expansion across various industries. He affirmed that the Samawah Gas-Fired Power Plant will be critical in strengthening the national grid, ensuring energy security, and increasing production capacity."
"The project spans 2,000 dunums with a total investment of $225 million. It includes two gas turbine units, each generating 125 megawatts, along with a 125-megawatt combined-cycle unit. The plant is primarily designed to run on natural gas but can also operate on heavy fuel oil as an alternative source," it added.
The statement also said "The infrastructure phase has been completed, with equipment and machinery supplied by U.S.-based General Electric (GE). Construction is progressing at a rapid pace, adhering to high-quality standards, with completion expected within 24 months."
"As part of the Samawah Industrial Hub Project, the power plant will provide essential energy infrastructure for Samawah Economic City, supporting small, medium, and large-scale investments. This initiative is expected to stimulate the national economy, strengthen local production, and enhance overall efficiency," it stated.
