Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Iraq's nomination for membership in the Human Rights Council for the period 2026-2028

    The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced, today, Monday, Iraq's nomination for membership in the Human Rights Council for the period 2026-2028, stressing Iraq's commitment to working with everyone to protect and promote human rights.
     
    The ministry said in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): that "The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Multilateral Affairs and Legal Affairs, Ambassador Shorsh Khaled Saeed, delivered the statement of the Republic of Iraq during the high-level session of the 58th session of the Human Rights Council, held in Geneva."
     
      "Ambassador Shorsh Khaled Saeed condemned the continued aggression of the occupying power on Gaza Strip and the targeting of defenseless civilians, which led to the martyrdom of more than 50,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, in flagrant violation of international human rights law," expressing "deep concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation," calling for "an end to the forced displacement of the Palestinian people."
     
    According to the statement "Saeed highlighted the achievements made by Iraq at the current stage, including conducting the population census for the first time since 1997, and the tangible progress in the economic sector, such as launching the Development Road Project, completing the first phases of Faw Port, and launching the strategic plan for the years 2024-2030," noting "the progress made in the field of women's empowerment and minority representation in various sectors of society."
     
      "Saeed announced Iraq's candidacy for membership in the Human Rights Council for the period 2026-2028," expressing his hope "for countries to support this candidacy," stressing "Iraq's commitment to working with everyone to protect and promote human rights, with a focus on addressing the negative impacts of climate change and helping developing countries adopt adaptation programs."
