Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced today, Wednesday, the start of the second package of projects to alleviate traffic congestion in Baghdad.
The Prime Minister's media office stated in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "al-Sudani inaugurated Al-Rashid Camp-Zafaraniya intersection tunnel and bridge project, one of the projects to alleviate traffic congestion in the capital, Baghdad / first phase," adding that "he also inaugurated the stone lining project for the left side of the Tigris River adjacent to Sinbad Road, which is one of the projects of the Ministry of Water Resources, with a length of 2.1 km."
During the opening ceremonies, the Prime Minister praised the efforts of the staff of the Ministries of Construction, Housing, Municipalities, and Water Resources, as well as the supporting entities, including the Baghdad Municipality, the Traffic Directorate, the PM monitoring team, and all relevant sectoral entities. He also extended his gratitude to the company responsible for implementing the project.
The Prime Minister congratulated the people of Baghdad on the opening of the overpass at the Al-Rashid Camp–Zafaraniyah intersection, expressing appreciation for their patience during the construction and reaffirming the commitment to working day and night to complete the remaining projects under the government program.
The Prime Minister noted that reducing traffic congestion projects have provided effective solutions for transportation routes, enhanced the aesthetic outlook of Baghdad, and created a generation of engineers skilled in technical and architectural precision, preparing them to undertake future projects.
Al-Rashid Camp–Zafaraniyah intersection project includes the construction of an overpass connecting the New Baghdad Road to Al-Rashid Camp and Zafaraniyah, measuring 900 meters in length and 9.5 meters in width. The underpass connects the southeast of Al-Rashid Camp and Zafaraniyah to the northwest of the Karrada district. It has a length of 430 meters and includes two lanes for inbound and outbound traffic, each 10 meters wide, with a central median.

Al-Rashid Camp–Zafaraniyah intersection project is the ninth project within the first package of easing traffic congestion initiatives, which includes a total of 16 projects.
The second project involved the stone lining of the left bank of the Tigris River along Sindbad Road, executed by the Ministry of Water Resources.
The second package of easing traffic congestion projects in Baghdad has already commenced.
The Zafaraniyah intersection project, with its components of a bridge, underpass, and other details, was a complex architectural endeavor requiring high technical precision.
The project faced delays due to the removal of obstacles and technical challenges in a densely populated area with overlapping utilities. The technical team overcame significant obstacles to complete the project.
The project has now been completed, ensuring smooth traffic flow and ease of movement for residents in this vital area of Baghdad.
Sindbad Road had been closed for decades, and the government is continuously working to find solutions to major issues, particularly those related to transportation and movement.
The Tigris Riverbank lining project was executed by the Ministry of Water Resources’ national staff at a low cost compared to the quality of the project.
Service projects will continue, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving the capital and all provinces, ensuring they appear in their best and most beautiful forms.
The government aims to enhance the infrastructure of the capital and other Iraqi cities, creating an environment that attracts economic, social, and recreational activities.
