Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani met today, Thursday, with Arab ambassadors and heads of Arab diplomatic missions operating in Baghdad to outline Iraq’s stance on the events and developments unfolding in the region.

The Prime Minister's Media Office said in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) ": "During the meeting, the Prime Minister emphasized that the grave turning points the region has faced since October 7, 2023, have left unprecedented repercussions.

The Prime Minister stated that Iraq has been in communication with several Arab and friendly leaders regarding the Syrian issue, presenting Iraq’s working paper, which focused on respecting the Syrian people’s free will and choices, as well as safeguarding the rights of minorities and the ethnic, religious, and social diversity that Syria enjoys. He underscored the importance of Arab states supporting Syria’s sovereignty over its territories.

The Prime Minister expressed concern over the risks of repeating past atrocities against minorities and ethnic groups at the hands of terrorism, particularly as the presence of ISIS elements resurges in Syria. He warned that attacks on Syria’s ethnic and religious diversity would have regional repercussions, especially in Iraq, given the presence of holy sites that could be targeted to incite discord and violence.

The Prime Minister concluded by affirming the readiness and capability of Iraqi forces, emphasizing that the remnants of the defeated ISIS do not pose a threat within Iraq. He also highlighted Iraq’s strong relations with Arab and friendly nations, which are characterized by high-level coordination. This has been reinforced by a plan implemented two years ago to fortify and secure Iraq’s borders with Syria, supported by a broad national consensus in favor of the government and its political program.
