Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Diab Abdullah, stressed today, Wednesday, the importance of Iraq joining the 1992 Water Agreement.
A statement by the ministry received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) said: "Minister of Water Resources Aoun Diab Abdullah and his accompanying delegation participated in the tenth meeting of the parties to the Water Agreement, which is being held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from October 22-25."
The minister stressed - according to the statement - "the importance of Iraq's accession to the 1992 Water Agreement to benefit from its legal tools, especially the fundamental principles in water resources management," indicating that "Iraq seeks to present water as a public benefit that can be useful in enhancing cooperation between the countries of the Tigris and Euphrates river basins and their tributaries and how to take the necessary measures to mitigate and adapt to climate change at the national level and its positive impact on the management of transboundary water resources."
The minister referred during his speech to the principles included in the 1992 Water Agreement, which is a basis that can be relied upon in reaching a "joint agreement on water between Iraq and the countries of the upper Tigris and Euphrates rivers."
