The Ministry of Interior announced, on Wednesday, the foil of arms smuggling operations across the borders in the governorates of Diyala and Maysan.

The Interior ministry stated in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "the Ministry of Interior was keen to ensure that the Iraqi borders with all neighboring countries witness high-level fortifications, and the intensive security and intelligence work had a clear impact in controlling the borders and preventing infiltration operations or any attempt to breach our lands through intensive security work and the use of modern technology and technical equipment, and in continuation of the continuous security achievements of the Border Forces Command in controlling border security, the detachments of the Second Regiment of the Eighth Border Brigade holding the border strip within Diyala Governorate were able to kill a smuggler, injure another, and arrest him after clashing with them following their attempt to smuggle (2) weapons with two ammunition boxes."

The statement added that "the detachments of the Third Regiment of the Tenth Border Brigade in Maysan were able to foil a smuggling attempt after clashing with three smugglers, wounding one of them, arresting them and seizing (12) Kalashnikov rifles in their possession."

It continued that "through initial investigations, it became clear that all of these smugglers hold foreign nationality," noting that "the duty also resulted in the injury of one of the heroes of the Border Forces."

The statement stressed that "the Border Forces Command will remain to protect the security of the Iraqi borders, and its men will remain the first line of defense for Iraq and its people."
