Director General of the Union of News Agencies of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Mohammed bin Abd Rabbuh Al-Yami called on Saturday to confront hate speech, bias and media misinformation.

The Union of News Agencies of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (UNA) participated in the activities of the “BRICS Media Summit” hosted by the Russian capital, Moscow, during the period (September 13-17, 2024), with a wide international presence.

Al-Yami explained that “the summit represents a high-level event to promote cultural and media pluralism in our world,” indicating that “the union was keen to enhance its cooperation with media organizations in the BRICS countries, so it signed cooperation agreements with major media institutions in Russia such as the TASS News Agency, the Sputnik News Agency and Radio, and Russia Today, and it also signed a cooperation agreement with the Federation of Latin American News Agencies.”

He revealed that “the Union was also keen to actively engage in forums and conferences organized in the BRICS countries, such as the “Russian-African Summit” for 2023, and the Kazan Forum 2023 and 2024. On the sidelines of these conferences, the Union held discussion panels, the most recent of which was the “Main Trends in the Transformation of the Information Field in the Modern World and the OIC Countries” forum, which was organized on May 15 within the framework of the “Kazan Forum 2024”, with broad participation from media institutions in the BRICS group and the OIC countries.”

He stressed that "the need for this cooperation is increasing day after day, especially in light of the crises and urgent issues we are witnessing, most notably the "Palestinian issue", which requires a humanitarian solution that leads to enabling the Palestinian people to obtain their legitimate rights, including the establishment of their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital," stressing "the Union's readiness to contribute to any initiative to enhance media cooperation between the BRICS groups and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, in a way that would build bridges of dialogue and understanding and enhance peace and stability in our world."
