Nasiriyah International Airport to Achieve 750,000-Passenger Capacity by Next Year

    Prime Minister Advisor Nasser Al-Awadi confirmed On Friday, that accelerating the completion of Nasiriyah International Airport is a priority for Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani.

     

    Al-Awadi told the Iraqi News Agency (INA), "Following directives from Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani, we visited Nasiriyah International Airport, which has garnered significant attention from the Prime Minister due to its importance."
     He added, "The airport will accommodate over 750,000 passengers, in addition to the substantial influx of foreign tourists visiting the Ziggurat of Ur and the House of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him), and the airport also as well as including a military airport."


     

    He further noted that "there is ongoing communication with the Chinese company to monitor the project's progress as instructed by the Prime Minister, to complete and inaugurate the airport by next year. This project is a significant landmark for Iraq and holds great importance for Dhi Qar Province."

     

    Ali Al-Gharabi, Director of Nasiriyah International Airport, explained to INA, "The Nasiriyah Airport project is a crucial strategic development for Dhi Qar Province, covering a total area of 16 million square meters, with 2 million square meters dedicated to buildings. Key structures include the passenger terminal, VIP lounge, control tower, and hotel."
     He highlighted that "the runway has been expanded to 3,400 meters to accommodate cargo and passenger aircraft."
     
    He added that "the project is currently 30% complete, with an expected 70% completion by the end of this year. The Prime Minister has instructed that efforts be intensified to accelerate the project's progress, and the Chinese company has committed to achieving 70% completion by year's end." 
    He noted that "the first phases of the project will accommodate 750, 000 passengers annually."
     
    He also mentioned that "the project is connected to Nasiriyah by a vital road, 21 kilometres away. There is vigorous effort from both local and central governments, led by the Prime Minister, to ensure the project's success and timely completion." 

    He emphasized that "the project is a strategic and significant tourist development, located near the ancient Ziggurat of Ur and the House of Prophet Abraham."

    Liu Xin, a representative of the Chinese company, informed INA that "work on this project has been progressing for two years, and we have achieved significant milestones." 

    He emphasized, "Despite encountering various challenges, the steadfast support from the Prime Minister and his advisors has been instrumental in overcoming these obstacles. We are confident that the project will be completed on time."
     
    He further highlighted that "the project demands both expertise and high quality, which we have consistently delivered to uphold the highest standards." 

    Liu Xin also noted that "the project involves two design teams: one based in China and the other in Iraq, with a combined total of 20 professionals working on it."
